What should I wear to camp each day?

  • Campers can wear comfortable shirts and pants/shorts daily
  • Sneakers and/or sandals

What should I bring to camp each day?

  • Uniform pants/shorts, Belt & USKA Karate T-shirt (to change into for classes)
  • Weapons/Sparring Gear
  • Water Bottles
  • Lunch (Snacks are provided)
  • Sunscreen
  • School Summer Reading and/or school work

When do I get my awesome karate camp t-shirt?

Each camper will be provided with 2017 summer camp t-shirt upon arriving to camp session (included with registration fee)! You may purchase additional camp t-shirts if sizes are available (price $15 each).

I can’t wait to sign up my child for camp! What is the price information?

Upon signing up, there is a registration fee of $50.
Each session of camp is at a price of $225.

There are many additional discount opportunities when signing up your camper such as: holiday early bird specials, 10% family discounts, and 15% discounts for signing campers up for more than 4 weeks of camp!

Volunteer Hours: Students attending camp to acquire volunteer hours for school are only required to pay field trip fees if they so choose to attend ($15-$30 per field trip).

Additional Camp Information:

Karate Session Training

Campers will be participating in 1-2 hours of karate classes daily at summer camp, except for Field Trip days! Attendance will be noted!

Lunches & Snacks

  • We do provide a daily snack, however Campers can bring their own snacks. They must bring lunches & beverages/refillable water bottle (except when the daily schedule for camp says lunch is included)
  • Please label all lunch boxes. You may choose to send the lunch in a paper or plastic bag since the lunches are kept in our refrigerator, but please label the bag!
  • Pizza Fridays are optional for campers for NO additional cost (includes two slices of pizza with juice box).
  • Please Note: We do not order food, heat up food, or provide utensils for campers.

Outdoor Water Activities:

  • Please provide camper with bathing suit, sandals, and towel
  • Put sunscreen on your child before they arrive at camp
  • Girls must wear a one-piece bathing suit or have an extra t-shirt
  • Boys must also have an extra t-shirt along with bathing suit shorts

**In order for campers to participate in camp water games the child must have a bathing suit or a change of clothes**

Field Trips:

  • Field trips are scheduled for Tuesdays, Wednesday, or Thursday
  • All field trips have extra fees unless otherwise noted
  • Please see field trip schedule for scheduled events
  • Parents are welcome to join us as chaperones on field trips at their cost
  • Campers should bring a brown bag lunch on field trip days
  • Campers must wear their karate camp T-shirt on the field trip day!

Are extra t-shirts, uniforms, gear available?

Definitely! Child size T’s are $15. Additional camp T-shirts are $15. We are offering uniforms to our campers at a special rate of only $50. White pants may be ordered for $20 and shorts for $25.


All parents will sign-in and sign-out their child daily. Drop-off will be at the front door of the karate school. If someone other than the parent will be picking-up his or her child we must be notified in advance or we will not let the child go until a parent is contacted.

**Walkers and Bikers must have written permission from their parents before we will let them leave.**

Meet our Summer Camp Staff

Master Sal Convento Owner and Chief Master Instructor Master Sal Convento

Master Sal Convento is a Two-Time World Champion, Fourth Degree Master Instructor in Tang Soo Do and a Fourth Degree Black Belt in Karate-Do. He has over thirty years of martial arts experience and is a highly-respected World Champion. He is a 1996 graduate of the United States Naval Academy who went on to become a Surface Warfare Officer and eventually a Naval Aviator. He took part in missions flying the EP3 Orion over Iraq and Afghanistan during “Operation Enduring Freedom” and was also stationed at the Omaha MEPS and was a Surface Warfare Officer in San Diego, California on three different amphibious ships. Master Convento holds a MS Degree in Executive Leadership (University of San Diego) as well as a Master of Arts in Management (University of Redlands). He is also the author of the book, Black Belt: The Winning Edge!

Stephanie SpearsStephanie Spears COO/Head Instructor San Diego

Ms. Spears is the head instructor at USKA San Diego and is responsible for daily operations and class instruction. She began her martial arts training at the age of 15 in Northern California. She currently holds a Third Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do, and First Degree Black Belts in Tae Kwon Do and Judo. She has trained extensively in several disciplines, and has traveled to Thailand to compete in Muay Thai. She has also traveled to Japan to study the art of Judo. She brings an extensive knowledge of these martial arts to the mat at U.S. Karate Academy.

As the Chief Operating Officer of USKA she is responsible for instructor certification and staff training, event planning and coordination, and overseeing day to day operations. She also leads the USKA Point Loma Demonstration Team. In May 2013, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management with an emphasis on Entrepreneurship at San Diego State University.

James TanagrasJames Tanagras Head Instructor Eastlake

Mr. Tanagras is a 4th Degree Master Black Belt in Taekwondo and a 1st Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do. He has over 28 years of experience in the Martial Arts which includes Muay Thai and Filipino Escrima. A devoted believer in the positive benefits of what the Martial Arts can do for its practitioners and he wishes to spread these benefits to all students.

Chris FagerChris Fager

Mr. Fager earned his First Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do on December 2013. Mr. Fager began studying martial arts at the age of 15. He trained in traditional Tang Soo Do for 3 years under Master John Gehosky at Pacific Karate in La Jolla, California. On October 30th 2010 he began training at the United States Karate Academy under Chief Instructor Sal Convento. Mr. Fager loves to teach Tang Soo Do to others (especially children) so that he can pass on the life-changing knowledge and skills he feels very fortunate to have received himself. He currently holds a Second Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do and a First Degree Black Belt in Hapkido.

Susan TownsendSusan Townsend

Mrs. Townsend earned her First Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do on October 2013 and began her martial arts training in college in the late 1960’s under the tutelage of two National Japanese karate champions. Although she was offered a scholarship, she left karate to teach high school biology. In the early 70’s she continued her martial arts training while on active duty in the U.S. Navy, taking Kodokan Judo under the instruction of Sensei Al Holtmann earning her brown belt. In November 2008, she joined the United States Karate Academy and currently holds a Second Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do.
